Duties of The Board
An Appraisal District Board of Directors hires the Chief Appraiser and the Taxpayer Liaison Officer; it also sets the budget. The Directors have no authority to set values or appraisal methods and are forbidden from discussing values with the Appraisal District. The Chief Appraiser carries out the Appraisal District’s legal duties, hires the staff, appraises property, and operates the Appraisal office.
Board Member Appointment
The Williamson Central Appraisal District is governed by a Board of nine Directors. Five Directors are elected by the taxing units that participate in the District. Members elected by the taxing units are nominated and voted on in the fall and winter of the appropriate year. Each taxing unit may adopt their own process for nominating and voting in members. Members elected by the public are voted on in the November election. Detailed information can be found on our Elections page. Three Directors are elected by majority vote at the general election by the voters of Williamson County. The County tax assessor-collector serves as a voting ex officio member.
Process for Appointment
Per Chapter 6 of the Texas State Property Tax Code, the Appraisal District is governed by a Board of Directors. Five Directors are appointed by the taxing units that participate in the District to serve staggered four-year terms beginning on January 1 of every other even-numbered year.
Taxing units elect five Board members using their percentage of 5,000 votes. Their percentage is calculated by using their percentage of the overall tax levy.
Three Directors are elected by majority vote at the general election by voters of the county in which the appraisal district is established. These members serve four-year staggered terms beginning on January 1 of every other odd-numbered year. The county assessor-collector serves as an ex officio voting Director.
