USPS Postmark Policy

USPS has changed its postmark policy so that dates reflect when mail is processed at a regional hub, not when it is dropped off. This means an envelope will likely receive a postmark stamp date days later than the drop off date.

Per Texas Property Tax Code Sec. 1.08 Timeliness of Action by Mail or Common or Contract Carrier, mail will be considered timely when it is properly addressed with postage or handling charges prepaid and:

  • bears a post office cancellation mark of a date earlier than or on the specified due date and within the specified period
  • bears a receipt mark indicating a date earlier than or on the specified due date and within the specified period; or
  • property owner furnishes satisfactory proof that it was deposited in the mail or with the common or contract carrier on or before the specified due date and within the specified period (obtains proof of mail)

To ensure a timely protest and to avoid potential issues, we strongly encourage property owners and agents to:

  • Utilize online filing options (if applicable). Search your property using the Property Search tool. Find and click the Protest Online icon.
  • Drop off to our office in Georgetown; after hours drop box is located at the main entrance between the two double doors.
  • Deliver mail week(s) in advance.
  • Obtain proof of mail by requesting a local postmark or receipt from USPS. This includes a certificate of mailing or certified mail services.

Please be advised that deadlines mandated by the Texas Property Tax Code cannot be extended due to postal delays. Contact our office prior to the deadline with any questions regarding submission options.
